5 Simple Ways to Create More Happiness in Your Daily Life
1. Be thankful.
If you want an instant happiness booster stop the current flow of your thoughts and ask yourself: What can I be thankful for right this moment? You will be amazed at your answers. They’ll be there. Trust me.
According to an article from Forbes, “gratitude may be one of the most overlooked tools that we all have access to every day. Cultivating gratitude doesn’t cost any money and it certainly doesn’t take much time, but the benefits are enormous.”
Make a mental note or write down on a piece of paper or in a journal all that comes to your mind.
What do you appreciate about your life? It may come easy or it may be hard, but do it. You’ll be amazed at the way your thoughts and mood shift for the good.
And, I mean a big light-up-your-whole-face-
*Quick story: Years ago when my children were little we drove to a big city for a conference for my husband. As you can imagine, traveling with small kids isn’t always easy. They wanted to stop at McDonalds and get breakfast and I thought that was fine, but my husband thought we didn’t have enough time. We stopped and it did make us run late.
By the time I dropped off my husband I was stressed. Not only were we running late, but I couldn’t find where to actually drop him off at. Then I got lost trying to find our hotel. I remember driving into a car lot so I could turn around. Right when I was getting ready to back up and turn around, a young salesman came out the door. He had the hugest smile on his face. He looked so expectant for goodness. It was a genuine, heartfelt smile. I quickly rolled down my window and told him I was just turning around. With the same smile on his face he told me to have a great day.
His kindness and happiness was just what I needed at that moment. It was such a small, random encounter, but it made an impact. My day started got better from that point. That fact that I can still remember this happening says a lot.
We never know what impact a smile may have. So smile even if you don’t feel like it. Smile for yourself and smile for others.
Get up and go outside if you can. Let some sunshine pour down on you. Soak it up. Let go.
If it’s evening, look for the moon or the stars. Listen. Listen to nature or just your surroundings. Get out of your own thinking mind.
Take a short walk or a long walk whether you are inside or outside. The point is to get out of your head and into a better place mentally.
The physical helps the mental.
4. Keep your perspective.
Will this matter a year from now? Five years from now? Take a step back. Maybe you’re too involved in the situation.
If you can, think of someone you admire and respect. Think about how she would look and handle the same situation you are in. If you are lucky enough to have this person available to you, call her. Ask for her input.
Look at the big picture. How does this situation fit in the whole story of your life? Is it worth the stress and strain your are putting yourself, and possibly others, through?
And lastly, always remember to be kind to yourself. What would you tell a friend or loved one in the same situation?
Most of the time life is happier when you keep things simple. It’s so easy to make things harder than what they need to be.
I remember several years ago throwing a baby shower for a friend of mine. I was starting to stress a little over all the details. I was asking her questions about what she wanted, and she replied, “Oh, just keep things simple. Whatever is easiest.” Whew, what a relief that was to hear.
Get in the habit of asking yourself, How can I simplify this? Keeping things simple means less stress and more joy.
Remember the acronym: KISS – Keep It Simple Sweetie.
