What would you do to recover a piece of your family’s history that had been stolen from you? In the movie Woman In Gold, starring Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds, the characters take their case to the highest court in the land.
Told in contemporary times and in flashbacks to World War II, Woman In Gold is the story of the famous painting of the same name (really called Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I) by Gustav Klimpt. Mirren’s character, Maria Altmann, is an octogenarian who fled her home country of Austria decades before. She lost family, had friends murdered, and had the eponymous painting stolen by the Nazis.
Eventually the artwork winds up in a museum in Vienna, and is considered such a national treasure that it is a magnet on thousands of fridges–the Mona Lisa of Austria.
Mrs. Altmann wants to recover something more than a valuable painting. She wants to right a wrong and reclaim her family’s heritage.
