When Are You Done Taking Chances?

This weekend I spent time with a hundred middle-aged women bloggers in Nashville at the first ever BAM Conference. Most of these women hadn’t met a single other person in the room. For some, it was their first blog conference. Everyone there had endured extreme winter weather to make the journey.

We all had two things in common: we were all 39 and up, and we are not nearly done living.

When we describe Midlife Boulevard as being for midlife women, we are immediately asked what ages are considered midlife. Generally, it’s about forty, but the outer edge isn’t determined by life expectancy. We think midlife keeps going as long as you are active in the world, seeking out adventure, and learning new things.

Midlife is not too old to start a new career, become an athlete, fall in love again, or travel the world.

In the new movie The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, we revisit the characters from the first movie. Maggie Smith’s character has transformed from a woman who comes to India to die into an active part of a growing hotel business. I can never get enough Maggie Smith, so seeing her in this movie will hopefully fill the coming void she will leave if it’s true that Downton Abbey will end next year.

Let Your Inner Adventurer Shine

While I loved the first Marigold Hotel movie, the characters felt more like my parents than my peers. In this sequel, I’m happy to see more of a focus put on the young innkeeper’s mother, with the added benefit of a little potential romance with silver fox Richard Gere.

Gere travels to India for adventure, but this past weekend my friends and I were able to stay a little closer to home and still have the trip of a lifetime.

When I go to the movies this weekend to see The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel I’ll be thinking of some amazing and brave midlife women it is my pleasure to call friends.
