“Detox.” It’s a loaded word, bringing to mind gallons of water, hunger and strife, and days of grumpiness due to relentless restriction from the foods you crave (or restriction from food in general).
Most people have strong feelings about detox programs… Either they love ’em or they hate ’em. Either they’ve tried them in the past (with great OR limited success), or they state firmly that they will NEVER do such a ridiculous thing. But let’s step back and look at the value of a detox, and how you can detox safely and effectively… No starvation required.If you’ve ever just hit a wall — run your body hard for too long and indulged in food and/or drink past the point of fun — then you might benefit from a “total system reboot” to get back on track with your health and nutrition goals.A “reboot” is how I like to think of the weekend-long detox plan detailed below. It’s safe, realistic, and totally doable. If you feel “yuk” then you might want to give it a try yourself!The basic guidelines are as follows:
A simple green juice for breakfast
A big beautiful salad at mid-day when digestion is strongest (I add lean protein to support my active lifestyle)
A nutrient-packed smoothie for a snack (if needed)
Soup with a side of raw or lightly steamed vegetables for dinner
A brief food-based cleanse is healthy and completely attainable. It will help you release and eliminate stored body fat and toxins, making you feel (and look) better, younger, and more vital.
I am not asking you to starve yourself or live on a single ingredient alone. Rather, a “weekend reboot” full of nutrient-dense, fluid-rich foods will nourish and sustain you, preventing crazy drops in blood sugar and is MUCH less stressful on your system than other — more aggressive — cleanse programs.
No matter the month, no matter the season, your body will FEEL BETTER after a “total system reboot” when you safely detox, and the best news is that you can make great strides toward feeling better in just one weekend by following the above guidelines!The following is one of my favorite recipes for a healthy smoothie that I love to indulge in during my monthly “reboot:”Carrot Cake Smoothie (tastes like carrot cake with cream cheese frosting!)Add to your blender:
1 large (or 2 small) carrot(s), peeled and sliced
1 frozen, sliced banana
2 cups unsweetened almond milk
Handful of ice cubes
3 Tbsp unsweetened, shredded coconut
1.5 Tbsp freshly ground flaxseed meal
2 pitted dates or 1 Tbsp honey
2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of sea salt
Blend on high. Serves two.
