“Many Paws, the years of change” A Menopause Book Giveaway

I’m just going to come right out and say it. I’m afraid of menopause.

Why are you reading a menopause book?

I’m afraid of walking through the gateway from my prime years into my older years. I’m afraid of drying out. I’m afraid of burning up. None of it looks appealing to me.

So I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the altered book Many Paws, the years of change, by Susan DeGarmo. Susan’s publisher sent me two copies of the book. One to review and one to give away.

First of all, who is Susan DeGarmo?

Susan is a Tennessee girl, same as me! She’s from Memphis, but it looks like she lives in the Nashville area now. She’s a mom and a grandma, and previously taught graphic arts. Once in class she had a hot flash and came up with the idea to create an altered book about menopause as a project  to demonstrate to her students.

What’s an altered book?

I’d never heard this term before, but it’s a “form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form” by changing its appearance or content. I just fell down a click hole looking at altered books on the Internet. Some are very beautiful works of art! This book, Many Paws, is a reproduction of DeGarmo’s original creation.

It’s a pocket-sized piece of art. The pages are heavy cardstock, filled with colors and images, pop-ups and pull tabs. There are several pages where you could paste in your own pictures, making the book personal to you or to a person you are giving it to as a gift.

So it’s not about dogs? No, it’s not a dog book. Ms. DeGarmo thought no proper Southern lady would have a book with the word MENOPAUSE out on her coffee table when the Bunko group comes over. No sure about this one. I’m a proper Southern lady, and despite my meno-phobia, I’d find that amusing.

All in all, this book has helped me very much with my fear of my unavoidable fate. Sure, my boobs will droop and I’ll get hot flashes nigh unto the very fires of Hades, but I can still keep my sense of humor, no matter what. Thanks for that lesson, Susan!

You can see Susan’s website, ManyPawsForWomen.com and you can buy the book through our Amazon affiliate link here: Many Paw, the years of change. The book would make a fun gift for the right woman in her fifties, but you really have to know her well.
