Holidays when I was growing up meant a road trip to Nashville to visit my grandparents. Granny and Papa were the source of all holiday fun. I loved my Granny’s mashed potatoes, even though I had to sit at the kids’ table. I was so mature for six, I thought I deserved the upgrade.
Papa always treated me like an adult. He never talked down to me, and I felt included in the big-people conversations. He was one of the smartest men I’ve even known, and I loved hearing him tell old family stories.
If there was any family dysfunction it was not apparent to me as a kid, so I’m grateful for uncomplicated holiday memories of food and family.
Now as an adult I see any family gathering can have its swirling eddies of unmet expectations and competitions left over from childhood. It’s way more fun to see this in a movie than to experience it in real life.
I’m always happy to see Diane Keaton on the big screen, and I’m especially excited to see her paired with John Goodman in the new holiday comedy Love the Coopers. It’s in theaters after November 13th.
Love The Coopers follows the Cooper clan as four generations of extended family come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration. As the evening unfolds, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down, leading them all toward a surprising rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of the holiday.
The whole cast looks great: Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Ed Helms, Diane Keaton, Jake Lacy, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, June Squibb, Marisa Tomei, and Olivia Wilde.

Love this cast, especially John Goodman. But back on topic, my favorite Christmas memory is waking up to find out my parents had bought me a VCR for Christmas. Talk about a blast from the past. The fact that I got to record and watch my own shows was amazing!!
