When I think of the 70’s, I think of vivid colors and a casual boho vibe. The 70’s fashion trend is the perfect opportunity for midlife women to let their hair down just a little bit and step out of more traditional styles.

How To Wear 70’s Fashion

70s Inspired Fashion 1There are a couple of elements that really pull this outfit together. First, it is anchored by flared jeans. Flared jeans work for a lot of body shapes because they elongate the leg and balance out the shoulders. I chose a pair of  wedges that work perfectly with the jeans.

When wearing flared jeans, choose a shoe height that will allow the pants to skim just above the ground. This promotes a strong vertical line that makes your legs look like they go on for days!

The second element is this fabulous multi-colored sheath dress. I’m wearing this dress over pants for two reasons. Dresses over pants was a popular feature of 70’s fashion. And, honestly, the dress would have been a little too short on its own. When wearing a dress over pants, watch the proportions. This combination often looks better if the dress is closer to the body, but still loose.

I added some orange accessories to pick up the colors in the dress; including a gorgeous handmade necklace from Thailand.

I also thought it would be fun to mix things up by adding a denim vest and an over-sized hip belt.

70s Inspired Fashion 2I hope I’ve given you enough to inspire you to give the 70’s fashion trend a whirl. It can also be fun to try just one aspect of the trend and mix it up with your more classic pieces. The beauty of this trend is anything goes… it’s all peace and love anyway, right?!
